Biography
Joni Vierre is a Finnish composer, improviser, and musician whose work exists at the meeting point of world traditions and contemporary expression. Blending elements of jazz, rock, and intercultural collaborative music-making, Vierre creates music that is firmly rooted in presence, deep listening, and human connection.
After years of working as a freelance musician in various Western music contexts, Vierre gradually became more interested in vulnerability and presence, than mastering genre specific aesthetics. His focus shifted increasingly toward his own voice and composition, while drawing inspiration from musical traditions around the world.
As a performer Vierre invites listeners into an experience that feels immediate and deeply alive. His performances are known for their dynamic extremes, moving seamlessly from near-silent sensitivity to raw, aggressive power.
Vierre has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Baraka Issabu, Humphrey Mubba, Dylan Fowler, Viivi Maria Saarenkylä, Julye Blom, Jarmo Nikku, and Mikael Saari. He is a composer and performer in the duo Värivarjo with Tommie Black-Roff, as well as a composer, facilitator, and bandleader of the intercultural improvisation group YHTÄ. His artistic practice draws from diverse musical traditions, with a primary focus on West African kora music and Irish traditional music. He has undertaken research field trips in Gambia and Senegal to study West African griot musical approaches and to collaborate with local musicians, including Omar Kuyateh and Bacaryole Junior. In Ireland, Vierre visits regularly and collaborates with local musicians such as Jordan Lively and Brendan McCarthy.
As an educator, Vierre gives private lessons in guitar, mandolin, music theory, and creative composition, and facilitates creative music-making workshops. He also works within community engagement project settings; one example is the community engagement project Canto del Agua in Chile, where Vierre worked as a facilitator, musician, and arranger.
Vierre has studied in the conservatory of Turku and holds a Master degree from Sibelius Academy global music department.
